WINZ grant

A WINZ funeral grant is governmental help to cover the basic costs of a funeral. It is income and asset tested, and there are certain requirements to be eligible.

This grant covers the cost of:

  • Body care
  • Casket
  • Newspaper notices
  • Hearse fees
  • Cremation fees


The maximum rate of the WINZ funeral grant is currently $2,616.12 as of April 2025

Compassionate air fares

What is a compassionate air fare?

When a loved one dies, immediate family members may need to travel from out of town to attend the funeral. Air New Zealand can assist these family members by providing a reduction on some fares within New Zealand. They do not provide a reduced compassionate rate for international fares, although they will assist with booking adjustments if you have had to change your international travel plans.

How do I apply for a compassionate air fare?

It is best to apply after the funeral service, when you have the necessary documentation. To apply, follow these steps:

  • Phone the Air New Zealand refunds team on 0800 733 8637 with your booking or ticket reference number. The staff will advise you as to whether you are eligible for a partial refund
  • If a partial refund is due, Air New Zealand will supply you with appropriate forms to fill out and return
  • Contact us on (07) 543 3151 and we will send you a letter of confirmation for you to forward on to Air New Zealand
