Cremation in Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty

Cremation is a respectful and straightforward alternative to traditional burial. It offers flexibility, simplicity, and is generally more affordable, with prices for a direct cremation starting from $3,871. For more information on pricing, check our Price Guide.

What is cremation?

Cremation involves reducing the body to ashes through high-temperature combustion in a cremator. One body is cremated at a time over 2–4 hours, with the casket included. Ashes are returned to the family within 1–3 working days and can be kept, scattered or buried.

In Tauranga, the only crematorium is located in Pyes Pa. It is owned and operated by Tauranga City Council, and a casket is required for all cremations. Pacemakers must be removed before cremation, while metal implants like hips or knees can remain and are later recycled.

Why choose cremation?

Cremation allows for personalised farewells, whether through a funeral service (before cremation, with the casket present) or a memorial service (after cremation, with ashes or photos). It’s often seen as more environmentally friendly and can cost around 50% less than burial.

Families also appreciate the freedom to honour their loved one in unique ways — from scattering ashes in meaningful places to creating keepsakes or jewellery.
