Caskets
In New Zealand, families have a wide range of caskets to choose from, allowing them to select a style and price that best suits their needs, budget and the type of funeral service they envision.
Caskets are available in materials such as cardboard, wood veneer, painted wood or solid timber. Families can also personalise a casket with custom wraps or bespoke painting.
Adult caskets are generally manufactured to a standard size of 6’1” internal length, 22” in width and 12” in depth. Larger-than-standard caskets are available at an additional cost.
Prices start from a simple option at $500 and can range up to over $6,000 for premium or fully customised caskets.
Cardboard casket
Richard Hope, one of the founders of Hope Family Funerals, has designed a custom-built cardboard casket with a solid, plywood base to provide a practical, respectful and affordable option for families.
It can be used in two ways:
- As a simple, dignified cremation casket for those who wish to proceed with cremation without holding a funeral service.
- As a discreet inner liner placed inside a hired, traditional casket for a funeral service. After the service, the inner casket is removed at the crematorium for cremation, while the outer casket is returned. We offer a wide range of caskets for hire to suit this arrangement.
This cardboard casket is not suitable for burials and is not available if the family would like their loved one to go home for a few days.
Both options significantly reduce the overall cost for families, while still allowing for a respectful farewell.
